In 1753 a Venetian land register recorded Villa di Meljine and described the whole Savina slope as vineyard. In 2009 Zoran and Gordana Obradović returned from London to plant vines on that ground again, after two and a half centuries. Their two hectare estate holds the Savina hillside in Meljine, 70 to 120 metres above the sea, beside the Savina Monastery.
Today, Castel Savina is the label for Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Chardonnay and Žižak from the estate, with annual production capped at 25,000 bottles. Each bunch is hand-picked, while Chardonnay and the red wines mature in French oak. Visits and tastings are arranged by reservation, with guided walks through the vineyard and old cellar.
